Not all industrial applications require drinking water quality. Some industries can suffice with a lower quality and others require a higher quality of drinking water. An example of low value application is the use of treated surface water from which North Water produces water of the desired quality at a lower cost price. This water is used as process water, but also as cooling water or flushing water.

High value applications of water (of extremely high quality) is necessary for the production of high pressure steam and for the use of process water in the chemical industry and foodstuffs industry. Technologies applied are membrane filtration, ultra filtration, ion exchange and reverse osmosis.
